If you have never seen Whitney Houston’s interview with Oprah, I strongly encourage you to watch it. It is a beautiful testament of what God can do! In that interview you see a Christian woman who fell and, by God’s LOVE, grace, and strength, got back up! I pray that those in abusive situations and those struggling with drug addiction would see her life and KNOW that God can not only bring you out, but bring you out better than you were before.
We live in a society where the media often painted her as “the celebrity with the drug addiction.” What is really sad is that many people, including Christians, have jokingly made light of her situation. How heartless is our society that many view another’s struggles as mere entertainment. But I am glad that “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). When you think about it, THIS – not the negative image the media has tried to portray – is what her life was really about…God taking our most difficult and trying times and turning them into beautiful and powerful testimonies for His glory!
In her interview with Oprah, Whitney said, “I have no regrets, not even my marriage.” She went on to explain that it all “worked together.” For someone to go through what she went through and say that she accepts even the darkest moments of her life, because it all worked together to make her stronger – WOW!
So, how will I remember Whitney? I will remember her as a sister in Christ who loved the Lord. I will remember a woman who, like any wife, wanted to keep her marriage together. I will remember a mother who loved her daughter dearly. I will remember a woman who made mistakes, but out of her struggles, birthed an album (“I Look to You”) that told the world, God is my strength and my redeemer; God is my refuge, a very present help in times of trouble. That is the Whitney that I choose to remember. To focus on anything else is to overlook God’s power to deliver.
In closing, I challenge all of us to continue to pray for the Houston family for a long time to come. Three weeks from now when this is no longer “news” we will move on to other things, but Bobbi Kristina’s world just stopped. Not only did she just lose her mother, but she also lost her best friend.
This young woman has been so heavy on my heart. She desperately needs our prayers. For my associates who may be thinking nonchalantly about this situation. I ask you to pray for Bobbi Kristina the same way you would pray for me had I lost my mother. These are not just celebrities, these are human beings who need our prayers.
God bless
